At a special meeting of the Big Pine School Board on April 3rd, 2020 the Board declared an emergency due to COVID 19. In the interest of student and community safety, the Board voted to close Big Pine school sites until the end of the 2019-2020 school year, but continue with distance learning and begin online instruction with access for all students beginning April 9th, 2020. Should there be any change to Federal and State guidelines in response to the Coronavirus Pandemic, the Board will reconsider a date for reopening.
Beginning Thursday, April 9th, 2020 all students in Big Pine Schools will be able to begin online distance learning. All students will have access to core curriculum online and will have their chromebooks to use at home. All students should be online and logged into their classes by Tuesday, April 14th. Login and passwords for online distance learning will be communicated to you and your student and available through your child’s email account.
Chromebooks for Grades Kindergarten through 6th grades are available to be picked up at school beginning Thursday, April 9th. All 7th through 12 grade students should already have their chromebooks. We were scheduled to be closed on Friday this week and Monday next week. We have decided to remain open on Friday, April 10th and Monday April 13th to serve meals to students and to also allow students access to their chromebooks so they can begin online distance learning. So beginning this Thursday from 11:00-12:30, students can pick up their chromebooks and a meal at school.
Online distance learning requires internet access. If you do not have internet access at home, Suddenlink/Optimum/Altice offers free broadband in our area for K-12 students displaced due to school closure. Please contact them for information and to schedule service. Optimum can be reached at 866-200-9522 and Suddenlink at 888-633-0030.
Your child’s teacher will be in contact with you and your student. The primary contact with you and your student will be through your child’s email account. Every student has an email account (@bigpineschools.org) and a password. These are Gmail accounts. For students in grades K-6, your child’s teacher will communicate with you and share this information. For students in grades 7-12, your child can share this information with you directly. Of course, your child’s teacher will work directly with you and your child on best ways to communicate through online distance learning. However, most academic information and links will need to be shared through email.
In this unprecedented time, we thank you for your patience and cooperation as we shift into distance learning. Please contact the school office for any general questions or assistance. If challenges arise with online distance learning, please contact Ed Dardenne-Ankringa at 760-938-2222 extension 2423 or email email@example.com.
