Courage and Adventure - State of California

An important component of our school is promoting courage and adventure through fieldwork and expeditions. In following EL Network Core Practice #26, our teachers promote adventures that create opportunities for leadership and collaboration.

I can practice close reading of a piece of art. I can explain the importance of preserving art for future generations.  I can be an ambassador for Big Pine School.

I can examine a piece of art and discuss its style, significance, and possible meanings portrayed in the work.

Indian Alley (downtown LA)

I can do my part to collect footage of Indian Alley and the surrounding cityscape to help document and tell the story of that place.

I can discuss a work by Basquiat while exploring the symbolism and meaning evident in the piece.

Museum of Tolerance & Anne Frank Exhibit

I can gather evidence with my phone to develop a presentation that uses pictures, text and speech to tell the story of the Holocaust.

Olvera Street

The first fieldwork trip undertaken at the beginning of our partnership with EL.


 LT: I can describe Dia de Los Muertos in my own words and pictures.  Students traveled by bus, then train to Olvera Street and back in one day to celebrate Dia de los Muertos.
